So you’re about to get interviewed for some position… The basic premise is to be (act) as professional as possible. There are also some things you should know like what to do and, perhaps even more important, what not to do.
What To Do
- Be on time – we can’t emphasize this enough. Even if your employer is late, you need to be on time.
- Be polite to everyone you are in contact with as you never know who they might be.
- Prepare specific, relevant questions about the company and position you want. It shows you are interested.
- Exude confidence and a sense of energy. Get a good night’s sleep to be fresh and well rested.
- Maintain good eye contact with the recruiter – it’s part of your play to show confidence.
- Related to the previous part – have a firm handshake.
- If you can, learn the interviewer’s name in advance so you can pronounce it correctly.
- Sit up straight and lean slightly forward, but make it a comfortable position. This projects interest.
- Make sure to follow up with a handwritten “Thank You” note. Or at least, send a “Thank You” email.
What Not To Do
- Don’t be (too) nervous if you can help it. Take deep breaths to calm.
- Don’t put on a false self – be your best self, instead.
- Don’t forget to turn off mobile phone!
- Don’t say negative things about former employers, even if you really mean every word of it.
- Don’t leave too early. If you have more interviews on that day, schedule more time for each one of them.
- If you’re nervousness, keep it for yourself. In general, the more you prepare the less nervous you will be.
