As all passionate individuals know, it’s not that easy to sustain a passion. Whether it’s your business, hobby or favorite sport, things could go wrong and before you know it – you’re not as interested as you used to be. Here are 3 things that can kill your passion, and you should see for yourself whether you can avoid/manage them and how.
1. Waiting
The thing about the passion is time. You can’t be passionate for something forever. If you don’t start following your passion/dreams quickly, the life will go on, taking you to the roads you never dreamt of taking (or you did, just with your passion on-board). This, however, doesn’t mean you should be abandoning your entire life just to pursue your passion – you should start preparing and the first time you have a chance, jump on it. Waiting for the right conditions rarely (if ever) pays off.
2. Not properly pacing oneself
Yeah we knot – it’s your passion, but you should look at it as a favorite candy. Try eating it every day and soon enough, you’ll hate it (not to mention the extra pounds). Pacing yourself is important to stay afloat. You don’t want to burn out quickly and should rather plan your next step(s). If you can, try “working” on your passion and schedule the things you want to accomplish on your way to the “goal,” presuming something like that is involved. Remember, life (and your passion as part of it) is not a sprint but a marathon.
3. Not measuring progress
Related to the previous point, it is important that you know *exactly* what you’re doing. Setting goals and checking back with them is essential. The good goal is “measurable” and “timed,” meaning that once you’ve accomplished something as part of your journey, you should be able to measure it against a benchmark. And since this is your passion, you’re the one setting the standards, benchmarks included. Just don’t cheat. 😉
