Getting into the Fashion Industry can be hard work. Sometimes it feels like it’s not what you know, but who you know. However, it is possible if you follow these 7 basic steps.

Step 1: Start with a short course in fashion design
Look for the course that has industry experts on the panel who can teach you not only the “standard things” but also share latest industry trends with you.
Step 2: Get work experience as early as you can
If you can, apply for an internship to get some fashion experience ahead of others. This will also show your future employers that you are pro-active, and that you have already started to learn how the industry works.
Step 3: Know where to look for jobs
Forget about newspaper and online job classifieds that list all kinds of ads. To find the best fashion jobs, you need to look into fashion industry specific job directories like ragtradejobs.com.
Step 4: Prepare a killer portfolio and resume
You’ll want to put extra hours to make your portfolio and/or resume look awesome. However, you should first make sure there’s substance to it, hence return to the step 3 if you have to. And if you have some design ideas, sketch them out.
Step 5: Re-do your Facebook page
Today’s employers are turning to social media to check for job candidates. Make sure your Facebook page works for you, not against you. Clean up any photos, conversations and posts that you don’t want your future boss to see.
Step 6: Submit Your resume and portfolio(s) to fashion companies
Once you have your “inner game” set, it’s time to start sending resumes. Create a list of companies you want to apply for a job and start clicking that “Send” button. Include a short and right-to-the-point cover letter with it.
Step 7: Practice your interview skills
Think about tricky questions (do some research) and make sure you have an answer for everything they put in front of you. Your goal is to impress your employer to give him a good reason why they should hire you.
