Last week, Starbucks announced plans to open 12,000 locations across the world by 2021, including 3,400 new places in the United States. These locations will be served by more than 240,000 people, 68,000 of which will be in the U.S.

The company plans to hire refugees, veterans, and young people:

  • Earlier this year, Starbucks has partnered with UNHCR, the International Rescue Committee, Tent Foundation and No One Left Behind to hire 10,000 refugees in the next five years. That news wasn’t accepted quietly, but the longtime CEO Howard Schultz decided to persist, nevertheless.
  • The coffee chain also wants to hire more veterans. Their previously stated goal of bringing 10,000 veterans by 2018 was reached earlier than expected, and now they aim to hire 25,000 veterans and military spouses by 2025. Also, the company will open 100 more stores to support military communities in the next five years.
  • Young people are also part of the picture now that they’ve surpassed the earlier goal of hiring 10,000 unemployed youth by 2018. The new plan is to have 100,000 young people working for Starbucks by 2020.

Beyond job opportunity, Starbucks also announced the new “Pathway to Admission” program, under which it will pay for classes and coaching for employees seeking a college degree.

Under the deal, employees who work more than 20 hours a week are eligible for full tuition reimbursement.
